Wanderlust

July 13, 2005 at 11:56 am (Christian Walk, Journal Entries, Musings)

The tires grip the road, I’m behind the wheel. My car speeds up I-75 on its way to Gainesville. The thoughts cross my mind, “What would happen if I kept on going all the way to Canada? Where does I-75 end? Does it become another interstate in Canada? Would I wind up on the shores of Hudson Bay?” Then the more realistic questions begin to hit: “Would I be able to catch up in my classes? How much would it cost to do that? How long would it take?”

Recently, I have been overcome with a sense of wanderlust, I’m itching to get out and have an adventure. I tell my friends that I want to take a road trip to Zion National Park in Utah and I’m dead serious. Last summer my friend Greg and I went on a road trip starting in Orlando and making stops in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Lexington, Cincinnati, Lafayette, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. We went all over the Midwest and then back again. It was amazing and I am yearning for another equally exciting adventure.

Christian Homosexuality

June 15, 2005 at 4:36 pm (Christian Walk, Journal Entries, Musings)

“Being a homosexual isn’t a sin, but having sex with another person of the same sex is.”
“Jesus loves homosexuals; he just doesn’t like it when they have sex with other members of the same sex.”

I thought of these quotes while trying to determine what my response should be towards homosexuality. I didn’t want to come straight out and say, “homosexuality is a sin,” because I don’t think it is. To me, homosexuality is a genetic or behavioral trait where a person is attracted to other members of the same sex either because of their genetic make up, or due to some experience throughout life. I have heard the testimony of homosexual men saying that as youths, they had dreams about other men and not women. This led me to believe that homosexuality is not a choice, at least not a choice for most.

“Catch us the little foxes,
the little foxes
that ruin the vineyards,
our vineyards that are in bloom.”

How many of you remember when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989?

Left to My Thoughts and Squirrels

May 16, 2005 at 7:26 pm (Academic, Journal Entries, Musings)

Believe it or not, I actually enjoy taking classes in Gainesville over the summer. Although it may seem heretical, it’s kind of nice to get a few classes out of the way over the summer while still having fun in Gainesville. One of the attributes (or downsides depending on how you look at it) of summer at UF is that the campus is almost completely empty.

A Summer’s Rain

May 12, 2005 at 4:39 pm (Journal Entries, Musings)

There’s something about rain. Just search my website for the word “rain” and you’ll find numerous posts all about the touch, the smell, the sight, the sound of rain. Yesterday, as I made my way to work, I noticed the dark clouds coming in. Then the sound of summer rains returned as thunder and the pitter, patter of rain began.

What is Love?

February 17, 2005 at 9:33 am (Journal Entries, Musings, Polls)

I’ve been contemplating this thought recently and trying to discern whether love is something that was invented in Hollywood, or whether love is an actual, real emotion. I personally believe that love is a real, tangible emotion, but I still have so many questions about the abstract idea of love. Is love really the overpowering emotion that the media portrays it as? Is there love at first site or is love something that builds over time (or both)? Is love a cause or an effect (do you go crazy about someone because you love them, or do you love them because you’re crazy about them)? Is love a choice or is it happenstance?

I’ve re-enabled comments, so it would be great to get a discussion going, let me know what you think.

Third World Products

January 24, 2005 at 9:22 am (Journal Entries, Musings)

I have recently realized that most of the products I own were made in third world countries by sub-subsistence level workers, by people who honestly scrape to make a living. Take for instance my shoes: made in China. Or my shirt: made in Mexico. Or my computer: made in Taiwan. By buying these products, am I exploiting the third world worker, or am I supporting the third world country?
